Daniel is an Australian-based producer, director, actor and librettist from the Hunter region of NSW. Starting his career as an actor, Daniel turned his passion towards the development of young people and founded the international award winning youth based acting academy, Hunter Drama.
Daniel works with New York based iTheatrics and Music Theatre International Australasia, to produce the annual Junior Theatre Festival Australia, which is the largest event of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere celebrating the achievements of young people in musical theatre.
As producer/director, Daniel’s credits include Puffs, Things I Know to be True, The Book of Everything, Rock of Ages, Shrek The Musical JR., Disney’s The Little Mermaid JR., Seussical, The BFG, Roald Dahl’s The Twits, Spring Awakening, Disney’s Alice in Wonderland JR., Disney’s Beauty and the Beast JR., The Music Man, The Addams Family and Rent.
As an actor, Daniel has won multiple CONDA Awards, with credits including Spamalot (The Very Popular Theatre Company), Endgame (The Very Popular Theatre Company), The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) (Popular Theatre Company), The Pillowman (Stooged Theatre), Charley’s Aunt (Popular Theatre Company) and Mamma Mia! (The Very Popular Theatre Company). He is also a Freddie G Fellowship recipient and has been awarded the keys to the city in North Carolina, for his contributions to the development of young people in the arts.
As a writer, his original works include Dot and the Kangaroo, a musical adaptation of the 1899 Australian children’s classic, with composer Daniel J. Mertzyulufft and lyricist Kate Leonard.
Daniel is a graduate from the University of Newcastle and the University of Sydney and is currently the Artistic Director of Newcastle-based theatre company, The Very Popular Theatre Company.
Dan is currently the Head Teacher of Creative & Performing Arts at Lambton High School.
He is most known in Newcastle as the Musical Director and Conductor of Starstruck at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre, for which he was nominated for the Telstra ARIA Award for Music Teacher of the year. He has also conducted productions of Billy Elliot, Jersey Boys, Chess, Mamma Mia!, Rock Of Ages, The Witches Of Eastwick, Into The Woods, Disney’s High School Musical, Oliver, Grease, Annie, Wuthering Heights and Jesus Christ Superstar.
In Sydney, he has played in the orchestra for the original Australian productions of Disney’s Beauty And The Beast, The Phantom Of The Opera, Wicked, Disney’s The Lion King and Side By Side By Sondheim. In 2013, he was the Music Producer and Associate to John Foreman for the Special Olympics Opening Ceremony.
As an arranger, he has provided arrangements for the Hunter Singers, Silvie Paladino, Marina Prior, Erin James, Tyran Parke, Lucy Durack, Debra Byrne, Avagail Herman and the casts of Wicked and Love Never Dies. Dan has also been Musical Director for The Rumour’s You Oughta Know: The Songs Of Alanis Morrisette, In The Air Tonight: A Night Of Phil Collins and, most recently, B & B: A Night Of Benny And Bjorn, starring Silvie Paladino.
Dan is the resident Musical Director for The Very Popular Theatre Company.
Rachel holds the dual role of Assistant Principal and Performing Arts Coordinator at the Hunter School of the Performing Arts, where her influence extends across education and arts spheres. Her commitment to student development is evident through roles at Creative Arts Camp, State Dance Camp, and the Junior Theatre Festival Australia. Rachel supported the development of the Pre-Diploma course in Musical Theatre at Hunter Drama and contributed as an industry professional to the writing of the NSW Arts Unit online resource, Move Ease.
With nearly two decades of leadership, she has led teams as Segment Director, Assistant Producer, and Dance Director for the Department of Education’s Starstruck. As a valued member of the production team, Rachel has directed many segments for the NSW Schools Spectacular at Qudos Arena. Her creative prowess extends beyond the school setting, with Rachel directing and choreographing segments for prestigious events like The Tasman Games, World Skills Australia, and the Australian Youth Olympics.
Rachel’s theatrical credits include acclaimed productions such as Rock Of Ages, Seussical, Urinetown, Disney’s High School Musical, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast JR, The Wizard Of Oz, Disney’s The Lion King JR, Disney’s The Little Mermaid JR, Shrek JR, Chess, Mamma Mia!, Jersey Boys, The Wedding Singer, and Legally Blonde. Her work on Mamma Mia earned her a CONDA Award for Excellence in Choreography.
